Ether.fi has decoupled restaking from its weETH token, now valued at $3.55 billion, converting it into a standard Ethereum staking token. Restaking exposure is shifted to a new token, weETHs, allowing users to opt for either standard staking rewards or higher-risk, higher-yield restaking.

The move follows a proposal by Ethereum researchers to eliminate staking rewards once participation crosses a certain threshold. Ether.fi’s founder argues this could disadvantage smaller stakers and staking-based products. Restaking involves reusing staked ether to secure additional services, increasing potential rewards but also risks.

Current weETH holders now face a clearer choice between basic staking and restaking, reflecting growing debate over Ethereum’s reward structure.
