Indonesia’s currency weakens slightly amid uncertainty over the central bank’s new governor appointment and broader safe-haven demand for USD.
The USD/IDR pair climbed to around 17,960 in Asian trading Thursday, recovering from nearly 0.5% losses the prior day. The move follows the resignation of Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo, prompting a leadership race as President Prabowo Subianto advances the nomination process.
Interim head Destry Damayanti has emerged as a frontrunner, with her name submitted to parliament for consideration. Economists note USD/IDR has remained rangebound between 17,900-18,000 this week, supported by lower oil prices and steady US Treasury yields near 7.3%.
The pair’s rebound also reflects renewed safe-haven demand for the USD after an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon heightened geopolitical tensions.
