The British pound steadies against the Japanese yen near 212.30, down less than 0.10% in Asian trading, as Japan’s fiscal outlook pressures the yen. Investors remain cautious despite a recent US-Japan joint intervention to support the currency.

Japan’s ruling party backed a plan to slash the food consumption tax to 1% for two years starting April 2027, alongside ¥600 billion in annual cash transfers for low- and middle-income households. Analysts warn the lack of clear funding risks undermining fiscal credibility, limiting yen strength.

BNY Mellon notes the measures may ease household strain but could conflict with efforts to stabilize Japan’s debt trajectory, complicating intervention durability.
