The studio failed to scale its decentralized gaming model and will open-source assets, including the PIRATE token ecosystem.
Proof of Play, a blockchain game developer backed by venture capital firm a16z, will cease operations after its decentralized gaming thesis failed to gain traction. The studio announced it could not build a sustainable business or prove blockchain-based games could drive a decentralized internet at scale.
At its peak, Proof of Play’s Apex and Boss networks ranked as the largest gas consumers on Ethereum’s rollup ecosystem. The company will open-source its code, artwork, and smart contracts, including the Pirate Nation game, under a CC0 license. The independent Pirate Nation Foundation will continue supporting the PIRATE token, though Proof of Play points will no longer hold redemption value.
The studio’s Shiba Story Go! game was acquired by an unnamed third party and will operate independently. The shutdown follows broader industry layoffs, including Yield Guild Games’ recent staff cuts and restructuring.
