Bhutan’s sovereign fund shifts part of its bitcoin holdings into a low-risk, yield-generating strategy amid undisclosed mandate size.
Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City has engaged Toronto-based 3iQ Corp. to manage a portion of its bitcoin treasury using a market-neutral approach. The strategy aims to generate long-term returns rather than passive holding, though the exact size of the mandate remains undisclosed.
The move follows earlier reports of Bhutan pledging up to 10,000 BTC and onchain data indicating roughly $1 billion in outflows from wallets linked to its sovereign fund. Market-neutral strategies, such as basis trades or lending, typically target annual yields of at least 5%.
Officials stated the partnership also seeks to develop local job opportunities and financial expertise, though specific programs are still under development.
