Covenant Logistics reports weaker earnings, citing structural changes to reduce volatility and focus on long-term freight market growth.
Covenant Logistics (NYSE: CVLG) stock fell Thursday after its earnings report failed to reflect the strengthening truckload market. The company’s financial results disappointed investors, despite efforts to pivot toward stability and long-term contracts.
CFO James Grant emphasized that Covenant has shifted from a volatile, commoditized business model to one focused on dedicated and warehousing services with multiyear customer commitments. This strategy aims to reduce exposure to freight rate fluctuations, unlike the company’s past reliance on irregular route operations.
Grant noted that the changes, while limiting short-term gains from rate surges, are designed to improve resilience across market cycles. The company’s performance during downturns has validated the approach, he said.
