Japan’s capital inflation gauge accelerates past estimates, adding pressure on the Bank of Japan ahead of its policy meeting.
Tokyo’s core consumer price index, excluding fresh food, climbed 1.9% year-over-year in July, surpassing the 1.7% forecast and the prior month’s 1.6% gain. The broader CPI rose 2.0%, up from 1.7% in June, while the ex-food-and-energy measure increased to 1.1% from the previous print.
The data marks the fastest pace in over a year for the core metric, reinforcing expectations of persistent inflationary pressures. Analysts had anticipated a modest uptick, but the sharper-than-expected rise may complicate the Bank of Japan’s policy deliberations as it weighs further monetary tightening.
Markets are closely watching the BOJ’s next steps, with the stronger inflation print likely to fuel speculation about an earlier-than-expected shift in its ultra-loose stance.
