A Federal Reserve policymaker indicated the central bank will avoid guiding markets, emphasizing that yields, inflation, and employment data should dictate financial conditions. The remarks suggest the Fed views markets as more effective in adjusting rates than its own interventions, particularly in non-crisis periods.

Stocks fell sharply, with the Dow dropping 1,130 points (-2.15%), the S&P 500 declining 1.29%, and the Nasdaq losing 1.34%. Treasury yields rose across the curve, with the 10-year yield up +6.3 basis points to 4.667% and the 30-year yield climbing +9.9 basis points to 5.194%. The 2-year yield, however, dipped -4.3 basis points to 4.233%.

The shift reflects a belief that market-driven tightening—via higher long-term rates—may curb inflation without further Fed hikes. The steeper yield curve and weaker equities signal investors are pricing in sustained restrictive conditions.
