Consumer Federation of America reports crypto scams accounted for over half of total fraud losses, with unreported cases driving estimates higher.
Americans lost an estimated $80.7 billion to cryptocurrency scams in 2025, according to the Consumer Federation of America. The figure reflects a 7.1x multiplier applied to $11.37 billion in reported losses to the FBI, accounting for unreported fraud.
Reported crypto scam losses rose 22% from 2024, with investment fraud as the largest category at $8.6 billion. The CFA cited a 2017 Bureau of Justice Statistics survey indicating only 14% of fraud victims report incidents to authorities.
The agency projects total annual online scam losses at $148.2 billion, with crypto-related fraud comprising more than half of reported cases. The multiplier used is described as conservative by analysts.
