Buckley Capital sold the majority of its Root Inc (NASDAQ:ROOT) shares at a significant loss, marking its largest misstep of the year. The firm cited underestimated industry headwinds, particularly in the soft commercial auto insurance market, as the primary reason for the exit on July 27, 2026, when ROOT closed at $59.65 per share.

ROOT shares have declined 47.47% over the past 52 weeks, despite a 6.67% one-month return. The company’s market capitalization stands at $944.03 million. Hedge fund ownership dropped slightly, with 24 funds holding positions in Q1 2026 compared to 25 in the prior quarter.

While Buckley Capital remains optimistic about ROOT’s long-term potential, it acknowledged near-term execution challenges. The firm left open the possibility of reentering the position in the future.
