Britain’s aerospace sector struggles to attract young engineers, with over half its workforce over 50 and AI competing for skilled labor.

The UK aerospace and defense industry faces an annual shortfall of 10,000 specialized engineers, as younger talent gravitates toward AI and emerging tech sectors. Trade group ADS reports that fewer than 10% of licensed aerospace engineers are under 30, while over 50% are older than 50.

Despite a 31% industry growth over the past decade, the talent pipeline has failed to keep pace. Recruitment efforts at events like the Farnborough airshow highlight the challenge, with fewer young candidates expressing interest in traditional aerospace careers.

Industry leaders warn the shortage risks long-term competitiveness, as demand for skilled workers outstrips supply. The trend mirrors broader labor market shifts, where tech-driven fields attract younger professionals.
