HDFC Bank shares plunged nearly 10% in early trading after reporting a 0.8% quarter-on-quarter decline in standalone profit after tax for Q1 FY2027. The result fell short of the average analyst forecast, marking a rare earnings miss for the lender.

The bank had posted a profit of INR 16,175 crore in the previous quarter. Analysts had anticipated a modest increase, reflecting steady growth in India’s banking sector amid robust credit demand.

The stock’s decline erased over INR 1.2 trillion in market capitalization, reflecting investor disappointment over the unexpected dip in profitability.
