U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent affirms 147.3 million ounces of gold remain at Fort Knox, addressing long-standing public doubts.
The U.S. Treasury confirmed that Fort Knox holds 147.3 million ounces of gold, approximately 59% of total U.S. reserves. The statement follows decades of speculation about the vault’s contents due to limited public access and rare audits.
The remaining reserves are stored at the West Point Bullion Depository, Denver Mint, and Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Fort Knox has not permitted visitors and has only removed small quantities for purity testing during audits.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent clarified that while he has not visited Fort Knox, U.S. Treasurer Brendan Beach has, and all gold is accounted for. The remarks also highlighted the shift from gold-backed currency to fiat money in the 1970s.
