FedEx implements over 50 pricing changes in 18 months, targeting surcharges to lift revenue without raising base shipping rates.
FedEx is expanding a series of new fees and surcharges across the EU and additional US zip codes over the next two weeks, avoiding direct base rate increases. The changes, part of a broader pricing strategy, include fuel surcharges, delivery area fees, and dimensional pricing adjustments, often less visible to customers than standard rates.
Over the past 18 months, FedEx has introduced or announced more than 50 pricing adjustments, according to parcel spend management firm LJM. Fuel surcharges alone surged 66% year-over-year in the second quarter, driven by higher diesel and jet fuel costs amid constrained crude oil supplies. Express parcel rates rose 5.9% in the same period, while ground rates climbed 5.2%.
The moves reflect a shift toward incremental, less transparent fees to boost revenue without alienating shippers focused on base rates. Competitors UPS and the US Postal Service have adopted similar strategies, amplifying cost pressures on transportation budgets.
