IBM’s $69 billion market value wipeout follows a revenue shortfall as clients prioritize AI infrastructure over traditional software and mainframe deals.

IBM shares dropped over 25% on July 14, erasing $69 billion in market value after the company disclosed weaker-than-expected second-quarter results. The stock closed at $212.67 on July 17, leaving its valuation at $202.5 billion. IBM projected revenue of $17.2 billion, a 1% year-over-year increase, and operating earnings of $2.93 per share, missing Wall Street estimates of $17.86 billion and $3.02 per share.

The shortfall stemmed from clients reallocating budgets toward AI-related servers and storage, sidelining traditional IBM software and mainframe purchases. Analysts noted the shift signals broader risks, as AI adoption may reduce spending on legacy systems without fully offsetting revenue losses for IBM.

The selloff marked IBM’s worst single-day decline, reflecting investor concerns over long-term growth prospects amid rapid technological changes.
