Coinbase’s Jesse Pollak is stepping back from leading the Base app after conceding his bet on onchain social applications and creator coins did not deliver expected growth. The move follows a strategic pivot for the Base network, which lagged in trading, payments, and tokenization due to its social focus.

Pollak spent two years prioritizing decentralized social platforms like Farcaster, Zora, and mini apps, but adoption stalled. While stablecoins, prediction markets, and perpetual futures gained traction, social applications “disintegrated completely,” he acknowledged in an X post.

Leadership of the Base app will transition to Jordan Fish, known as ‘Cobie,’ as Coinbase refocuses efforts on broader blockchain utility. The shift aims to realign Base with high-growth areas in crypto infrastructure.
