Stripe and private equity firm Advent International have submitted a joint offer to acquire PayPal for about $53.4 billion. The bid is supported by $50 billion in committed bank financing, with both firms set to hold equal stakes in PayPal if the deal proceeds.

PayPal, which manages 440 million active accounts and processed $1.8 trillion in payment volume last year, has faced challenges under new CEO Enrique Lores. The company recently announced plans to cut $1.5 billion in costs and reduce its workforce by 20% amid efforts to revive growth.

Stripe, valued at $159 billion earlier this year, processes $1.9 trillion in payments annually. PayPal has not publicly responded to the proposal.
