Investors await Wells Fargo’s first unrestricted quarter since 2018, with net interest income seen as the key growth indicator post-asset cap.

Wells Fargo (WFC) reports second-quarter earnings Tuesday, with net interest income taking center stage. The metric, flat at $47.5 billion in 2024 and 2025, reflects the bank’s struggle under a $1.95 trillion asset cap imposed after its fake-accounts scandal. The Fed lifted the restriction in June 2025, allowing balance sheet expansion for the first time in seven years.

Management has guided for $50 billion in net interest income this year, signaling a return to mid-single-digit growth. The cap previously constrained loan growth, limiting income from the spread between loans and deposits. Analysts will scrutinize whether the bank can capitalize on its newfound flexibility.

The results mark a pivotal moment for Wells Fargo, which has lagged peers in revenue growth. A rebound in net interest income could signal a broader recovery in its core banking operations.
