The S&P 500’s trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 25.7x, nearing dot-com era highs, raises concerns over a potential 10% summer sell-off. Sticky inflation and elevated energy prices have dimmed hopes for near-term rate cuts, adding to market unease.

Forward 12-month P/E ratios stand at 23, above the historical average of 18, while July’s historical volatility further stokes correction fears. Analysts warn that weak second-quarter earnings or disappointing guidance could accelerate a pullback.

Defensive stocks like VZ and ENB, offering high yields and stable cash flows, are gaining attention amid the uncertainty. VZ expects $21.5 billion in free cash flow this year, while ENB has raised dividends for 31 consecutive years.
