Anthropic appointed former U.S. Federal Reserve chair Ben Bernanke to its Long-Term Benefit Trust, an independent oversight body ensuring the AI startup adheres to its public mission. Bernanke, a Nobel laureate in economics, led the Fed from 2006 to 2014 and navigated the 2008 financial crisis.

The trust comprises experts with no financial stake in Anthropic and holds authority to appoint or remove a majority of the company’s board members. Bernanke joins three other independent members, reinforcing the startup’s governance structure as it balances commercial and social objectives.

Anthropic operates as a public benefit corporation, emphasizing ethical AI development alongside profitability. Bernanke’s research on financial crises and monetary policy may inform the trust’s oversight of AI’s broader economic and societal impacts.
