June FOMC minutes reveal policymakers see elevated inflation risks, with some open to future rate hikes if price pressures persist.

Federal Reserve officials unanimously kept interest rates unchanged in June but emphasized persistent inflation risks, according to the latest FOMC minutes. Policymakers noted that while labor market downside risks had eased, upside inflation risks remained elevated, driven by factors like AI investment, tariffs, and geopolitical tensions. Staff projections were revised upward for inflation in 2026 and 2027, reinforcing concerns about price stability.

The minutes showed a shift in communication strategy, with most participants favoring the removal of an easing bias in post-meeting statements. A majority also supported shortening the statement to emphasize the Fed’s commitment to its dual mandate. While GDP growth forecasts were modestly downgraded, the discussion underscored greater concern over inflation than economic slowing.

Several policymakers indicated that another rate hike could become appropriate if inflation evolves unfavorably, though they backed unchanged policy in June. The minutes suggest a higher bar for rate cuts, aligning with a higher-for-longer narrative.
