HSBC has initiated a strategic review of its retail and small-to-medium enterprise banking operations in Türkiye, evaluating all potential outcomes. The assessment excludes wholesale and investment banking but may reshape the bank’s local footprint amid a broader global restructuring led by CEO Georges Elhedery since October 2024.

The move follows HSBC’s recent divestments in Sri Lanka and France, as well as an ongoing evaluation of its Egypt business. The bank emphasized its commitment to Türkiye, citing the country’s role in supporting international and Turkish firms expanding abroad. Reports suggest Emirates NBD is in talks to acquire HSBC’s Turkish operations.

HSBC aims to prioritize markets where it holds a competitive edge or sees stronger growth prospects. The review aligns with its strategy to streamline operations and improve profitability, though no final decisions have been announced.
