June vehicle registrations hit 426,883 units as a temporary tax break boosted demand amid broader economic weakness.

Japan’s new vehicle sales rose 8.6% year-on-year to 426,883 units in June, accelerating from a 5% gain in June 2025. Passenger car sales jumped 9.5% to 360,452 units, while truck volumes edged up 3.1% to 65,323 units.

The rebound follows the March expiration of the prefectural Environmental Performance Tax, which spurred two months of stronger demand. Still, sluggish GDP growth of 0.6% in Q1 2026 and higher borrowing costs continue to weigh on consumer sentiment.

Year-to-date sales through June totaled 2.39 million units, up 1.8% from the same period last year, with light truck sales surging 18% to 116,763 units.
