Sanofi appoints Paulo Fontoura to lead R&D while MacroGenics secures $24.5 million from FDA approval milestone.
Sanofi SA (NASDAQ:SNY) appointed Paulo Fontoura as Executive Vice President and Global Head of Research & Development Pharma, effective September 1. Fontoura will oversee the company’s innovation pipeline, including research, clinical development, and regulatory affairs, reporting directly to CEO Belen Garijo.
The move follows Sanofi’s ongoing R&D transformation and pipeline expansion across therapeutic areas. Fontoura, with over 25 years of experience, replaces Dr. Houman Ashrafian, who is departing for new opportunities.
Separately, MacroGenics confirmed receipt of a $24.5 million regulatory milestone payment from Sanofi, tied to the FDA’s accelerated approval of TZIELD (teplizumab-mzwv) for delaying insulin production decline in children.
