Bank of Russia confirms digital ruble rollout on September 1, with full implementation targeted by July 2027 despite EU restrictions.
Russia will introduce its central bank digital currency (CBDC), the digital ruble, on September 1, according to the Bank of Russia. The launch follows years of development and comes amid preemptive sanctions imposed by the European Union in April, citing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The digital ruble law will take effect on the set date, with a transition period extending until July 2027. The EU’s sanctions aim to limit the CBDC’s use in circumventing financial restrictions, though Russian officials have not detailed specific countermeasures.
Analysts warn that failure of the digital ruble could push Russia toward energy-intensive alternatives like Bitcoin (BTC), straining its aging power grid. The country lacks domestic semiconductor production and relies on China for critical technology.
