A European Central Bank executive attributed recent euro area inflation volatility and economic uncertainty to geopolitical conflicts and climate-related risks tied to fossil fuel dependence. Frank Elderson noted that Europe’s reliance on imported oil and gas has amplified price shocks, including those from the Middle East conflict this year.

The speech highlighted that while the current energy crisis is less severe than the one triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it has still driven up oil prices and disrupted supply chains. Elderson argued that accelerating the transition to net-zero carbon could mitigate these risks but requires coordinated policies to avoid economic disruptions.

Elderson’s remarks underscore the ECB’s growing focus on climate risks as a macroeconomic stability factor, though no immediate policy shifts were announced.
