Ayano Sato’s appointment may slow BOJ tightening pace

The Japanese government has appointed Ayano Sato, a former academic, to the Bank of Japan’s board. Sato is seen as an advocate of loose monetary policy, which could lead to two dissenting votes against future rate hikes.

The appointment comes ahead of Sato’s July 30-31 policy debut and may increase yen sensitivity to BOJ rhetoric. The departure of the board’s most hawkish members, Tamura and Takata, in July next year adds uncertainty to the tightening trajectory.

Markets will weigh the government’s preference for monetary caution against the BOJ’s readiness to tighten further in response to energy-driven price pressures. Sato’s 5pm press conference will be closely watched for early signals on her stance.
