Ethlabs launches as an independent research hub backed by key Ethereum figures to advance core network development amid funding concerns.
A new nonprofit, Ethlabs, has been established to support Ethereum’s long-term research and development, backed by ConsenSys founder Joe Lubin, Bitmine, and Sharplink. The initiative aims to provide stable funding for technologists who have driven past network upgrades, addressing concerns over limited resources at the Ethereum Foundation (EF).
The EF currently holds just 0.16% of Ether’s total supply, prompting warnings of a potential funding crisis. Recent asset sales by the EF have fueled debates about the network’s financial sustainability, with calls for new structures to guide Ethereum’s evolution.
Lubin stated Ethlabs will help prepare Ethereum for broader adoption by offering an independent home for researchers. The move reflects a shift toward decentralized stewardship as the network enters its next growth phase.
