Malaysia’s vehicle sales declined 12% year-on-year to 61,250 units in May, driven by fewer working days due to religious holidays. Passenger vehicle sales dropped 11% to 57,360 units, while commercial vehicle sales fell 26% to 3,890 units.
In the first five months of 2026, total sales dipped 1% to 315,568 units from 319,846 a year earlier. Production also declined 4% to 287,477 units over the same period. GDP growth slowed to 5.4% in Q1 2026, down from 6.2% in Q4 2025, with consumer sentiment turning cautious amid inflation concerns.
Market leader Perodua saw sales fall over 9% to 130,778 units year-to-date, while Proton reported a 38% jump to 84,294 units, led by strong Saga model demand.
