A federal judge ruled Meng Wanzhou’s 2021 admissions on Huawei’s Iran sanctions violations can be used against the company in its upcoming trial.
A U.S. federal judge ruled that Huawei Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou’s 2021 admissions regarding the company’s illegal business in Iran can be presented as evidence in Huawei’s upcoming criminal trial. Meng acknowledged lying to a financial institution about Huawei’s compliance with U.S. sanctions and export control laws as part of a deal to dismiss charges against her.
The ruling rejected Huawei’s argument that prosecutors could not use Meng’s statement against the company, with Judge Ann Donnelly stating that Huawei adopted her admissions. Meng, arrested in 2018 on a U.S. warrant, became a focal point in U.S.-China tensions after her detention in Canada.
Huawei has not commented on the ruling. The trial’s outcome could further strain U.S.-China relations and impact Huawei’s global operations under ongoing sanctions.
