China’s Consumer Price Index increased 1.2% year-over-year in May, unchanged from April’s print, the National Bureau of Statistics reported. The figure fell short of the 1.3% consensus forecast, highlighting persistent deflationary pressures in the world’s second-largest economy.

Analysts had anticipated a slight pickup in inflation amid signs of economic stabilization. April’s CPI also registered 1.2%, following a 0.7% rise in March. Weak consumer demand and industrial overcapacity continue to weigh on price growth.

The data may influence monetary policy expectations for China’s major trading partners, including Australia, as softer inflation could prompt further stimulus measures.
