A former OpenAI researcher now leads Tencent’s AGI efforts, signaling China’s shift toward US-style artificial general intelligence goals.
Tencent has appointed former OpenAI researcher Yao Shunyu as its chief AI scientist, tasking him with building artificial general intelligence (AGI) in China. Yao, who joined Tencent within the past year, outlined plans to create a long-term AGI organization during a Beijing event co-hosted with local authorities.
Chinese firms have historically focused on AI applications in manufacturing and consumer electronics, partly due to US chip restrictions. Baidu’s CEO previously estimated AGI would not be achieved until at least 2034, while Elon Musk forecasted a 2026 timeline. The hiring of Yao reflects a strategic pivot toward competing with US firms like OpenAI and Alphabet’s DeepMind.
Yao stated that AGI development requires foundational knowledge, product integration, and frontier exploration, dismissing the idea that ChatGPT or Claude would dominate as the sole super-app. He emphasized untapped potential in the trillions of dollars for broader AI applications.
