The cuts affect less than 1% of Uber’s global workforce but target senior roles to streamline operations under new leadership.
Uber is reducing 23% of its People and Places division, which oversees human resources, recruitment, and workplace facilities. The layoffs impact less than 1% of the company’s 34,000 global employees, with senior-level positions disproportionately affected.

Hazelbaker cited organizational complexity and fragmentation as key issues, aiming to create a more efficient structure. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi supported the changes, emphasizing the need to maximize team effectiveness.
An Uber spokesperson clarified that artificial intelligence played no role in the decision, despite broader industry trends linking layoffs to AI investment.
