Rivian’s R2 Performance AWD SUV has matched Tesla’s Model Y in key EPA efficiency metrics, a milestone for the EV sector. Both vehicles consume energy at the same rate, but the R2 delivers an additional 24 miles of range, according to certification data.
Tesla has long led the industry in EV efficiency, setting the benchmark for miles per kilowatt-hour. Rivian’s achievement with the R2, a mass-market SUV launched in March, signals growing competition in a segment Tesla has dominated for years.
Deliveries of the R2 are set to begin in two to six weeks, following order invitations starting June 9. The efficiency parity could pressure Tesla’s market position as Rivian expands its lineup.
