Investor shift toward AI-driven firms lifts SoftBank past Toyota as Japan’s top company by market value.
SoftBank Group became Japan’s most valuable company after its market capitalization rose above ¥48 trillion, eclipsing Toyota’s ¥46 trillion. A 14% surge in Tokyo trading on Monday drove the milestone, marking the first time SoftBank has held the top spot since 2000’s internet bubble peak.
SoftBank’s shares have nearly doubled year-to-date, fueled by its expanding AI investments, including a $65 billion commitment to OpenAI and plans to build $87 billion in AI data centers. Toyota’s valuation has declined over 10% since January amid macroeconomic pressures and geopolitical tensions.
The shift reflects growing investor preference for technology and AI infrastructure over traditional manufacturing sectors.
