HSBC data shows Asia’s small-cap equities delivered stronger returns with lower volatility than regional large caps over five years.
Asia’s small-cap stocks have outperformed regional large caps by nearly 3% annualized over the past five years, according to index-level data. The segment also exhibited lower volatility and more balanced sector diversification, offering a compelling risk-adjusted return profile.
Firms promoted to the MSCI Asia ex-Japan large-cap index saw average gains of 245% in the year before promotion, but returns dropped to 18% in their first year as large caps. India stands out as a heavily weighted small-cap market, with analysts highlighting under-researched opportunities and potential profit growth.
The report notes that while Taiwan and South Korea dominate both small and large-cap indices due to the global tech rally, small caps provide broader exposure across sectors and geographies.
