A jury found a defunct Texas trucking firm and its driver grossly negligent in a 2025 crash that killed a 29-year-old man.
A Texas jury awarded $49 million to the family of Steffan Mick, who died in a January 2025 crash caused by a truck making an unsafe left turn. The verdict targets OPG Logistics, a now-defunct carrier, and its driver, Biorkys Sanchez Fernandez, both found grossly negligent.
The $49 million judgment falls between the $10 million threshold for a ‘nuclear verdict’ and larger recent awards against trucking companies. OPG Logistics had at least eight drivers at the time of the crash but reportedly ceased operations during the legal proceedings.
The plaintiff’s law firm argued liability against the company, while OPG’s attorney admitted driver negligence but contested corporate responsibility. The case was heard in Ector County, Texas, an oil-rich region near Odessa.
