Japan’s April Tokyo CPI and Ministry of Finance intervention figures may influence yen volatility amid inflation and policy expectations.

Japan’s Tokyo Consumer Price Index for April is expected to show a modest uptick, with core CPI excluding fresh food projected at 1.6% year-over-year, up from 1.5% in March. Core-core CPI, excluding fresh food and energy, is forecast to hold steady at 2.0%. Industrial production is anticipated to rise 0.2% month-over-month, signaling slight economic momentum.

The data follows March’s mixed inflation signals and precedes national CPI figures, offering an early read on price trends. The Ministry of Finance will also release details of foreign exchange interventions conducted between April 28 and May 27, which could clarify policy responses to yen depreciation.

Markets will watch for any hints of sustained inflation or intervention activity, as both could shape expectations for Bank of Japan policy and yen stability.
