Meta Platforms has initiated layoffs affecting approximately 8,000 employees, part of a broader restructuring to prioritize artificial intelligence initiatives. The cuts follow an announcement last month targeting 10% of its workforce, with notifications sent to affected staff this week.

The company previously employed around 86,000 workers as of late 2025, making this one of the largest reductions in its history. Meta’s stock declined modestly in early trading, reflecting investor reaction to the cost-cutting measures amid heightened AI competition.

Shares slipped slightly, though broader market movements remained muted. The layoffs are expected to streamline operations as Meta ramps up spending on AI infrastructure and product development.
