Federal Reserve data shows the top 1% of U.S. households now control nearly a third of national wealth, up from prior periods.
The top 1% of U.S. households held 31.9% of the nation’s wealth in Q4 2025, according to Federal Reserve data. The ultra-wealthy, or top 0.01%, controlled 14.5% of total wealth, highlighting a sharp rise in inequality.
This marks an increase from previous quarters, as wealth concentration among the richest households continues to accelerate. The middle class has shrunk, while the share of wealth held by lower-income groups has declined.
Economists warn the trend could lead to long-term economic instability, with potential policy responses including wealth taxes or stricter tax enforcement.
