The investment aims to meet rising electricity demand from utilities, industries, and data centers amid global grid modernization efforts.
ABB will invest $200 million over three years to expand medium-voltage manufacturing capacity across Europe. The program targets critical power distribution technologies, including SF6-free switchgear and grid automation products, to address surging electricity demand from utilities, data centers, and industrial electrification.
Roughly $100 million will fund a new facility in Dalmine, Italy, specializing in air-insulated and SF6-free medium-voltage switchgear. The remaining $100 million will support capacity expansions in Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Norway, and Poland. The move follows projections that electricity’s share of global energy consumption will rise from 20% to nearly 30% by 2030.
ABB said the investment is designed to improve supply availability and reduce lead times for customers as grid operators face pressure to upgrade aging infrastructure and integrate renewable energy sources.
