Florida governor blasts proposed 9.5% property-tax hike
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s tax agenda, arguing that raising taxes on property owners will not solve the city’s affordability crisis.
The proposed 9.5% property-tax hike is intended to help close a multibillion-dollar budget gap.
DeSantis urged tax-worn New Yorkers to flee to Florida, citing the state as a more affordable alternative.
The governor’s comments come after Mamdani proposed the tax increase as a ‘path of last resort’ if Albany did not agree to higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy, with 3 million people potentially affected and facing increased costs of $100 or more.
